Zoning Board of Appeals
The Zoning Board of Appeals consists of seven members, appointed from the community, by the Mayor with the advice and consent of the City Council. The Board of Appeals meets on the third Monday of each month, when there are zoning matters pending. The Board is responsible to hold public hearings on any request for a zoning change, special use, or variance, and forward its recommendation to the City Council for final action. The members of the Zoning Board of Appeals are: Kent Smith, Maxine Smith, Howard Grant, Mark Sosnowski, Richard Hebel, Dan Trout, and Jim Barham.

Historic Preservation Committee

The Herrin Historic Preservation Committee is a very active committee in the City and interested in preserving the history and architectural integrity of the City. The Committee consists of nine members, appointed by the Mayor, with the advice and consent of the City Council. All members shall have expertise, experience and interest in the area of historical and architectural preservation, construction or engineering. The members of the Historic Preservation Committee are: Peter B. Bondioli, Chair, Linda Banks, Gordon Pruett, Joe Maeser, Bill Sizemore, Louis Allehnani, and Bert Gordon.

The purpose and powers of the Historic Preservation Committee are:

A. To identify, designate, preserve enhance and perpetuate those properties and improvements, which reflect the historical, cultural, economic, artistic, social, or heritage, or which may have a special community or aesthetic interest or value to the City, or properties which may be representative of an architectural or engineering type inherently valuable for the study of a period, style, craftsmanship, method of construction or use of indigenous materials.

B. To preserve and protect the character and vitality of traditional areas in the City from the adverse effects of inappropriate development that could detract or have a blighting effect on the quality in these areas.

C. To preserve the existing housing stock and to conserve and improve the City’s tax base and to promote economic development through restoration, rehabilitation and maintenance.

D. To foster civic pride in the beauty and accomplishments of the past and to promote the education of the general public regarding preservation.

E. To protect and enhance the attractiveness of the City to residents, prospective residents, and visitors, and support and stimulate business, commerce, and industry, resulting in an economic benefit to the City.

F. To foster and encourage preservation, restoration and rehabilitation of structures, areas, neighborhoods, and prevent future blight and deterioration.


Board of Fire and Police Commissioners

The Board of Fire and Police Commissioners consists of three members, appointed by the Mayor , with the advice and consent of the City Council. The current Commissioners are: Dave Bandera, Joe Maeser, and Bill Milani.

The Board conducts the tests for applicants who seek employment as a firefighter or police officer, and compiles eligibility lists of those applicants who may be eligible for employment, provided all conditions of employment are satisfactorily complied with by the date of hire.
