Nature / Outdoors Herrin is conveniently located in the middle of the “Heartland.” Our community is in the southernmost tip of Illinois, the northwest extreme of the Ozark Mountains, and midway between the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers. Because of its rolling hills, untouched forests and wandering lakes, the area is unlike any other in Illinois. You would have to truly experience it to know why the locals call it “God’s Country.” Within a 25-mile radius of seven major recreational lakes, you’ll find some of the finest fishing in the world. Large mouth bass, blue gill, crappie, and catfish are so abundant that there is a fishing tournament almost every month. Located about 8 miles away is the wooded area known as the Crab Orchard Wildlife Refuge. Wild game hunters will find deer, quail, rabbit, dove, squirrel, raccoon and turkey. Goose and duck hunting is especially popular also. Crab Orchard is on the largest Canadian Goose flyway in the United States, and hundreds of thousands of geese stop by here each year. A national forest and seven of Illinois’ most scenic State Parks are within a 30 minute drive. This makes sightseeing, hiking and picnicking a prominent part of local life. It’s truly an outdoorsman’s fantasyland! Lakes / State Parks Other Links: Williamson County Tourism Bureau This web site contains information about fishing, hunting, and more. http://www.wctb.org |
